Miss Take (Part 1)

When mama asked Sam to go to the store opposite their house to get her baking powder, neither her nor Sam knew their life was about to change.
"I'm doing homework, mama” Sam had replied.
“I'll cut your mouth if you say that to me again” Mama retorted. “Will you leave that seat now and go get me baking powder before I make you?” Mama said, her voice a whole notch higher.
Grumbling, fifteen year old Sam closed his note to obey his Mama. He stretched and yawned as he stood. He had been sitting for an hour and some minutes.
Sam was one of those teens that went to school because he had to. He didn't hate school, but he wouldn't say he love it either. In fact, he thought nothing of school. He just went because he had to. He had one year left before graduation, then he'll head for college.

He looked at his wrist watch, the one his girlfriend, Jane had bought him when he turned fifteen. The time was 3:15pm.
His girlfriend, Jane, for his birthday, had also kissed him. A real kiss; their tongues clashing in a space-fight. It was better than the previous pecks she used to give him. He had felt like a man that day. And he had loved her even more.
Jane would be fifteen too, some months from then. Sometime around October. It was May, so that was still some time away. Jane however was more worldlywise, of which Sam couldn't but admire.
“How much quantity do you want?” Sam asked when he got to the kitchen.
“How much quantity is going to be enough for bread for you and me and your papa, eh?” Mama asked back.
Pouting behind her. “I dunno”
Like thunder light Mama turned, her had meeting his face in a spark. He shook from the slap.

“What did I do?” Sam asked tearfully, his hands instinctively going to soothe his face.
“When I ask you a question don't say I dunno” mimicking his voice. “And don't pout when I'm talking to you” she said, standing akimbo. Mama was a round, short woman. She was pretty, but plenty times Sam found her annoying.
“I didn't pout” Sam said, spreading his arms.
“You, don't lie to me, boy” She said, poking him with her cooking spoon. Turning around, she pointed the glass in front of her.
“Well, she saw my reflection.” Sam thought to himself, saying nothing to his Mama. “. A lie is not meant to be believed anyway. It can be dumb, it can be smart, but it's still a lie” He mused.
“Now go get me baking powder, and don't be long.” Mama said, putting down the pot on the cooker. “Take money from the top shelve”
Moving like a zombie, he took the money and walked out to the door.
“Don't be long” Mama said again when he was at the door.
“It'll take forever” Sam said.
Mama turned to him. He was gone already.
